Driver Education Grant Program for Newcomers to Canada

Having a drivers licence can be a very important part of life in rural Saskatchewan. It can also help you to find or maintain your employment in Northeast Saskatchewan.

Applications for the program will be taken year round or until funding has run out.

What is the Driver Education Grant Program for Newcomers?
​​The Driver Education Grant Program for Newcomers to Canada covers part of the cost of the 6x6 Driver Education Program (6 hours in class, 6 hours in car) for eligible new immigrants to Saskatchewan.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must:

  • Be a Temporary Foreign Worker on a valid work permit (open or closed) OR be a Permanent Resident

  • Have lived in Saskatchewan for less than 5 years

  • Are at least 18 years of age and are not enrolled in Public High School (10-12)

  • Currently hold a valid Saskatchewan Class 7 Learners Licence

  • Be mandated by SGI to complete the 6x6 training

  • Require financial assistance in order to cover the cost of the 6x6 program

  • Require a drivers licence for employment purposes (to maintain your job, to move up in your job, or to find a job/open more employment opportunities)

As part of the application process, you will be required to complete a household budget to demonstrate your income, expenses and level of financial need. If the program is full when you apply, you will be placed on a waitlist. If someone is unable to complete the program, or more spaces open up, the next in line on the waitlist will be contacted. 

To be considered for the program, you CANNOT begin training until you are approved. We are unable to reimburse for training already taken. The program does not cover: fees to write the knowledge test, fees to take the road test, training fees if you choose to take additional classes not required by SGI, fees related to re-taking a test if you do not pass.
